Agri-Food Trade Competitiveness: A Review of the Literature

Being competitive in the international agri-food trade is an important aim of every country. It should be noted that this term has neither a commonly accepted definition nor synthetized index to quantify it. The most used indices literature are Balassa and its modified versions (revealed advantage, revealed competitiveness, normalized comparative symmetric advantage) different export and/or import-related (e.g., Grubel–Lloyd or balance index). Based on systematic review literature, these measurements were identified along with major factors suggested for higher competitiveness. seems supportive legislation (trade) policy crucial factor, followed by value-added/more sophisticated goods, high, efficient, profitable production. Although EU member states overrepresented analyzed candidate countries, as well other trading partners EU, e.g., Canada, China, ASEAN also analyzed. Thus, some findings may generalized.
